Dermal Filler Pre & Post Instructions

If you have a special event or vacation coming up, please keep in mind that you may want to schedule your treatment at least 2 weeks in advance.

Pre-Treatment:
2 Weeks Before
Clients should not schedule any vaccination or invasive procedures for 2 weeks before or after treatment with dermal fillers.
These include but are not limited to: COVID vaccine or flu Vaccine, dental cleaning or dental work, lesion excision or biopsy, surgery of any kind, internal device placement, tattoo or permanent makeup.

You cannot move forward with your dermal filler treatment if you have had cosmetic treatments with laser, ultrasound, peels, facials, or microdermabrasion less than 14 days prior to injection

1 Week Before
Discontinue the use of Aspirin, Motrin, Ginkgo Biloba, Garlic, Flax Oil, Cod Liver Oil, Vitamin A, Vitamin E, or any other essential fatty acids to minimize bruising or bleeding. Please consult with your primary physician prior to discontinuing any medications.

1-3 Days Before
Discontinue Retin-A two (2-3) days before treatment to avoid any increased redness and irritation.

Avoid alcohol, caffeine, Niacin supplement, high-sodium foods, high sugar foods, refined carbohydrates, spicy foods, and cigarettes. All of these factors may increase risk of bruising and swelling.

If you have a history of cold sores, it is recommended that you are pretreated with medication prior to the injection treatments around or near the oral area. The medication will need to be initiated 3 days prior to your treatment visit. Please call for us to provide you with a prescription.

If you develop a cold/flu, cold sore, blemish, or rash, etc. in the area to be treated prior to your appointment, please reschedule your appointment until it resolves. You cannot receive dermal fillers if you are sick or on an antibiotic.

Day of Treatment:

Bruising at the treatment site may occur. Temporary, minimal to moderate swelling can be expected. It is normal to experience some tenderness at the treatment site that can last for a few hours or, at times, a couple of days. It is normal to feel “firmness” in your treated area/s for the first few days after treatment. Over time, the area/s will soften and “settle”.

Do NOT touch, press, rub, or manipulate the implanted areas for 12 hours after treatment. This can cause irritation, sores or possible scarring. When cleansing your face or applying make-up, use gentle, sweeping motions to avoid excessive mobility of the area/s.

Apply cool compresses to the area/s treated (avoiding pressure).

You may begin wearing makeup once you have adequately cooled/iced the area/s, and any pinpoint bleeding from the injection site/s has subsided.

If you experience any mild tenderness or discomfort, you may take acetaminophen/Tylenol. Avoid aspirin or ibuprofen products, vitamin E and fish oil, as they may increase your potential to bruise.

Avoid drinking alcohol for a minimum of 12 hours as this may contribute to bruising.

Post-Treatment:
Please report to your provider if any increased pain, increased swelling, redness, blisters, or itching immediately, should it occur following your treatment

24-72 Hours Post
Avoid submerging head under water for a full 24 hours after midface treatment; this includes pools, beach, bathtub, hot tub, etc.

Avoid vigorous exercise, sun and heat exposure for 1 day after treatment. Avoid extended UV exposure until any redness has subsided. Apply an SPF 30 or higher sunscreen to the treated area/s.

Ice the treated areas for the next 1-2 days. Place the icepack on the area for 20 minutes and remove the ice pack for 20 minutes.

Try to avoid wearing makeup until the day after treatment. Earlier use may cause pustules. If you must wear makeup we recommend a good quality mineral makeup for the face.

Avoid alcohol, caffeine, Niacin supplement, high-sodium foods, high sugar foods, refined carbohydrates, spicy foods, and cigarettes 24-48 hours after your treatment. These items may contribute to increased swelling or irritation.

Avoid the use of Retin-A or similar products (ex. Kinerase, Tazarac) 2 days after treatment to avoid increased irritation or redness.

No facial massage for 72 hours

1-2 Weeks Post
Avoid Aspirin, Motrin, Ginkgo Biloba, Garlic, Flax Oil, Cod Liver Oil, Vitamin A, Vitamin E, or any other essential fatty acids at least 3 days to 1 week after treatment. These items may increase bleeding and bruising.

Avoid obtaining any vaccination, dental cleaning, dental work, lesion excision or biopsy, surgery of any kind, internal device placement, tattoo or permanent makeup for 2 weeks following procedure.

2 weeks of healing time is normal. One side may heal faster than the other

Avoid cosmetic treatments such as laser, ultrasound, peels, facials or microdermabrasion for 2-4 weeks after treatment
